This cooling, creamy, and flavourful easy 5-minute avocado crema pairs well with a variety of Mexican dishes, such as tacos, enchiladas, and burrito bowls. You can also enjoy it spread on sandwiches and as a dip for chips! Make a big batch and enjoy it all week long.

This recipe is naturally vegetarian and gluten-free, and can easily be made vegan and dairy-free. Read the post for ingredient swaps.

Every home cook needs a handful of homemade dressings, dips, and sauces in their arsenal. This is one such dip has been on rotation in our house for the past few months! It’s similar to the avocado goddess sauce recipe that is served with my popular bbq meatball bowls, but even simpler and just as delicious!

If you’re looking for a new, flavourful, and healthy condiment, look no further than avocado crema. Delicious on tacos, burritos, enchiladas, bowls, and burgers, it’s sure to become a new family favourite.

Think of avocado crema as a thick avocado cream sauce: a cross between guacamole and a creamy avocado sauce.

    Ingredients

You’ll need just five ingredients for this easy avocado lime crema sauce, including salt!

    • Avocado: Avocado forms the base of this sauce. Rich in vitamin E and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, it’s become a staple in healthy diets for good reason.
    • Limes: Limes provide a big pop of tangy flavour. You’ll need the juice of two limes in this recipe.
    • Sour cream or Greek yogurt: For creaminess. Dairy also helps to keep this dip nice and green in the fridge for several days. This is why it doesn’t turn brown quickly, unlike guacamole.
    • Fresh cilantro: Cilantro is traditional, but any fresh herbs can be used. Basil is delicious here!
    • Sea salt: Season with sea salt to taste. I find ½ teaspoon of fine sea salt to be perfect in this recipe.
    • Garlic: Optional! I often make it without, especially if I am serving it with a dish that already has plenty of garlic in it.

How to Make Avocado Crema – The Recipe Method

process shot showing all of the ingredients in a food processor.
    1. Step 1: Combine all of the ingredients (avocado, lime juice, sour cream or Greek yogurt, cilantro, salt, and optional garlic) in a food processor fitted with the ‘S’ blade.
process shot showing the crema after it has been blended in a food processor.
    1. Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy.

Hint: If you do not have a food processor, simply mash the avocado in a bowl, then add the remaining ingredients (just be sure to finely chop the cilantro and mince the garlic beforehand). The texture will be more like guacamole, but it will still taste delish!

    Substitutions

    • To make dairy-free/vegan – instead of sour cream or Greek yogurt, you can use non-dairy sour cream.
    • Herbs – cilantro is traditional, but feel free to use any combination of fresh herbs. Basil and parsley would also be tasty.
    • Limes: No limes on hand? Use about 4 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice instead.

    Equipment

You’ll need a food processor to make this recipe. I like my Cuisinart 12-cup food processor. If you do not have a food processor, not to worry. You can make this recipe by mashing the avocado with a fork and then mixing in the remaining ingredients with a spoon.

    Storage

Store your avocado crema in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

Use avocados that have reached the perfect ripeness. Avocados that are too ripe can be brown on the inside and throw off the vibrant colour of the crema. Avocados that are not quite ripe enough won’t blend up into a creamy sauce.

Make a spicy version of this recipe by adding a finely diced jalapeno pepper or some hot red pepper flakes.
