Who doesn’t love a good creamy chipotle sauce? If you have been reading the blog since the beginning, you’ll know that I am a big fan of homemade dressings and sauces. They are often what elevates a meal from good to great.

When I decided to create my own chipotle sauce recipe, I knew that it had to check off a few boxes. It needed to be creamy without the use of mayonnaise. It needed to be spicy, but not too spicy. And it needed to have just a hint of sweetness.

Well, I’m happy to say that the sauce I came up with checks off all of those boxes. Greek yogurt, canned chipotle peppers, cumin, garlic, salt, lime juice, and honey come together in this delicious, simple, and healthy sauce.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Healthy: While most chipotle sauces contain either mayonnaise or sour cream, this recipe is made with high-protein Greek yogurt. It’s still creamy, but it’s lighter than other versions.
    • Easy: To make this sauce, simply throw all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
    • Balanced flavour: I think you’ll really enjoy the balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavours in this sauce.

    Ingredients

Below is an overview of the ingredients you’ll need to make this Greek yogurt chipotle sauce. Scroll down to the recipe card for quantities.

    • Greek Yogurt: We’re using Greek yogurt as the creamy base for the sauce.
    • Limes: An essential ingredient in Mexican-inspired recipes. Lime juice makes this sauce tangy and bright-tasting.
    • Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce: Canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce can be found in the international aisle of well-stocked grocery stores. Their smoky flavour and spiciness are essential in this recipe!
    • Cumin: Ground cumin adds an additional layer of flavour.
    • Honey: Provides a hint of sweetness and offsets the spice ever so slightly.
    • Garlic: A clove of raw garlic adds flavour and immunity-boosting qualities.
    • Kosher Salt: I use Redmond Real Salt brand of kosher salt. Use any salt you like, and season to taste. I found ½ teaspoon of kosher salt to be just right.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    1. Step 1: Place all ingredients in a blender.

    Allison’s Top Tip

Taste the sauce after blending and adjust the seasonings to taste. You can add an additional chipotle pepper if you like it on the spicier side, as well as more salt and honey.

    FAQ

What is chipotle sauce made of?

Chipotle sauce is a spicy, creamy sauce traditionally made with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, mayo, and sour cream. My version is a lightened-up recipe that swaps Greek yogurt for the mayo and sour cream.

What are chipotle peppers in adobo sauce?

Chipotles are matured, dried, and smoked jalapeno peppers and adobo sauce is a flavourful puree made from tomatoes, garlic, spices, and sugar. You can find it in cans in the international section of most grocery stores.

What can I do with the leftover chipotles in adobo sauce?

Transfer the remaining chipotles and adobo sauce into an airtight jar and store in the fridge for up to a month. You can use them to make a fresh batch of this sauce, or, for a change, you can make my chipotle tahini sauce or chipotle veggie enchiladas.

Hi Michelle, a serving size would be about 1/6th of the recipe or 2.5 tablespoons. I just updated the info in the recipe card! Enjoy!
