Happy Wednesday! It’s suddenly hot here in Ottawa (30 degrees C). If you’ve been visiting Up Beet Kitchen for awhile, you might know that I am not a fan of heat. I live for fall and winter, and I love to be slightly chilly. I really do feel as though I have a physical aversion to heat. (My mom also tortured me with news that it’s 1 degree C in Edmonton today, which, if you read my last post, is where I’m going to be moving in August; that would actually be heaven to me, LOL). So as you might imagine, I find myself coping with Ottawa’s sultry summer weather by coming up with all sorts of cold treats and drinks in the warm months.

strawberry lemonade kombucha crush: the details

The first of many warm weather recipes that I’ll be sharing with you over the next few months is this strawberry lemonade kombucha crush! The idea for this drink popped into my head the first time that I tasted the GT’s Strawberry Lemonade kombucha. Its flavour is reminiscent of the slushies that I would get from the corner store when I was a kid. On hot, humid summer days, my brother, my best friend Kristen, and I would run down to the Quickie convenience store at the end of our block and go to town on whatever flavours were on offer. It’s a fond memory that was revived when I took my first sip of this healthy strawberry kombucha crush. The alcohol is totally optional; it also tastes great without. Either way, it makes a great happy hour drink that’s a little fizzy, a little sweet, a little tangy, and very cooling.

This crush requires just four ingredients: Strawberries, ice cubes, kombucha, and gin, vodka, or white rum.

    the method

Add the strawberries, ice, and kombucha to an upright blender. Blend until a crush/slushie consistency is reached. This only takes about 10 seconds- don’t over-blend or it will end up too liquified.

Pour into one or two glasses (I split it with my mom, but I could have easily drunk the whole thing) and top off with the alcohol, if using. Give it a quick stir to incorporate the alcohol, garnish with a lemon slice, and enjoy immediately!

    a few final thoughts

If you can’t find the strawberry lemonade kombucha, feel free to use any kombucha flavour that you like. Likewise, feel free to use other berries. A delicious combination would be ginger kombucha and blueberries in place of the strawberry lemonade kombucha and strawberries. Let your imagination run wild. 🙂

    Description

This boozy strawberry lemonade kombucha crush is a super cooling, fun, and healthy happy hour drink! Strawberry lemonade kombucha is blended with whole strawberries and ice, then topped off with gin or vodka, if desired.

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 cup fresh strawberries (organic if possible)
    • 1 cup ice cubes
    • 1 cup strawberry lemonade kombucha (GT’s brand)
    • 1–2 oz gin, vodka, or white rum
    • Lemon slices, for garnish

    Instructions

    1. Add the strawberries, ice, and kombucha to an upright blender. Blend until a crush/slushie consistency is reached. This only takes about 10 seconds- don’t over-blend or it will end up too liquified.
    2. Pour into one or two glasses (I split it with my mom, but I could have easily drunk the whole thing) and top off with the alcohol, if using. Give it a quick stir to incorporate the alcohol, garnish with a lemon slice, and enjoy immediately!

    Notes

Use any kombucha flavour and fruit you like. I love the idea of ginger kombucha + blueberries and guava kombucha + kiwi as well.

Nutritional information does not include the kombucha because the ingredient does not exist in the database.
