This Easy Tuna Pizza with a pita crust, red onion, olives or capers, and mozzarella cheese is made with pantry ingredients and comes together in less than 20 minutes. It’s packed with flavour and high in protein.

I’ve mentioned this in a few of my recipe posts since having a baby, but it bears repeating: I finally understand what moms mean when they say that they have very little time to cook.
When I look back on my older recipes, I am struck by how much time I must have had on my hands to create recipes with 20+ ingredients that took an hour or more to prepare. That is no longer my reality, and I can appreciate that it is not the reality of most families, especially those with young children!
It is now my mission to create recipes that come together with ease without sacrificing flavour or nutrition! To that end, I’ll be adding many more recipes to my Quick and Easy collection in the coming months.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Easy to make: Because these pizzas are made with pita crusts instead of pizza dough, they come together in no time at all. Simply spread the pitas with sauce, add toppings, and bake for 12 minutes.
- Pantry ingredients: These tuna pizzas are made with basic pantry staples: Pizza sauce, canned tuna, olives or capers, plus some red onion and cheese.
- High in protein: Each pita pizza has 27 grams of protein, making this a high protein lunch or dinner recipe that will keep you satiated.
Ingredients

- Pitas: I used regular 8-inch whole wheat pitas. I would actually prefer thicker Greek-style pitas here, so if you can find them, use them! These would also be great with naan bread.
- Pizza sauce: For the base. Use your favourite pizza sauce; I like Rao’s and Whole Foods 365 brands. Or, use your favourite pesto instead.
- Canned tuna: Look for a good quality canned tuna, such as Raincoast Trading or Safecatch brands.
- Red onion: For a pop of colour, crunch, and flavour.
- Green olives or capers: I used castelvetrano olives on half of the pizzas and capers on the other half. Both olives and capers have a wonderful salty, briny flavour that pairs well with the tuna.
- Mozzarella cheese: The ideal cheese for pizza as it melts beautifully and has a mild flavour that doesn’t overpower.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the pitas on a baking sheet and spread with pizza sauce. Top each with ⅓ cup to ½ cup of the cheese, depending on the size of your pitas.

Step 2: Top with the tuna.

Step 3: Add the red onion and olives.

Step 4: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the pizzas are somewhat crispy around the edges.

Substitutions and Variations
- To make gluten-free: Use gluten-free pitas.
- To make dairy-free: Use non-dairy cheese.
- To make vegetarian: Omit the tuna.
- Change the base: If you’re not a fan of pizza sauce, use pesto or Alfredo sauce.
- Change the cuisine: This recipe is for an Italian-inspired tuna pizza, but another option would be a southwestern tuna pizza with cilantro lime pesto, corn, red onion, and Monterey Jack cheese!
- Use a different cheese: You can use feta and/or Parmesan cheese to replace some or all of the mozzarella. Fontina is also a great pizza cheese!
Equipment
- Baking sheets
- Box grater
Storage
Feel free to bake the tuna pizzas ahead of time. Simply cool fully, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. If stacking, place a sheet of parchment paper in between them to prevent the cheese from sticking.
Reheat in the oven at 375 degrees F for 8-10 minutes.

FAQ
A variety of pizza toppings go with tuna. My favourites include pungent red onion, olives or capers for a briny finish, and mild, creamy mozzarella cheese. You can also make a tuna pizza with cilantro pesto, corn, red onion, and Monterey Jack cheese for a southwestern version.
While it is an unconventional pizza topping in North America, tuna is a delicious, high-protein option. It is a common pizza topping in Italy.
