This beet grapefruit endurance juice recipe is inspired by the Liver Cleanse juice from Bliss in Victoria, British Columbia. My version incorporates beets, grapefruit, lemon, and cayenne, and is made in a blender rather than a juicer.
Way back in 2015, I was studying Holistic Nutrition at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, British Columbia. It just so happened that Bliss, my favourite vegan cafe, is conveniently located directly across the street from the college. It was the greatest blessing for my taste buds, and the greatest curse for my bank account, let me tell you!
Almost every day, around a certain hour in the afternoon, I would jaunt on over for a pick-me-up drink. Often, I’d opt for a smoothie, like the Cacao Jedi (containing banana, cacao, hemp, and maca) or something caffeinated–their Mayan Mocha is without parallel–but on the rare occasion when I didn’t, I’d order the Liver Cleanse juice. As someone who has always been addicted to citrus fruit, I couldn’t get enough. The original liver cleanse juice from Bliss is made with beet, grapefruit, orange, lemon, ginger, and cayenne.
My inspired version omits the ginger and is made in a blender. Because who has money for a juicer (or the space to store one, for that matter?).
how to make energizing beet grapefruit endurance juice:
To make my energizing beet grapefruit endurance juice, you’ll chop 1 medium beet, 1 medium grapefruit, 1 medium orange, and 1/2 a lemon. Add it to your blender (preferably a good one like a Blendtec or Vitamix), along with 1/8 tsp of cayenne and 3/4 cup of filtered water. The water is essential here: because you are not pressing the ingredients through a juicer, the water is essential to facilitate blending. Don’t worry, though–it doesn’t water down the juice.
Blend on high until almost smooth (not totally smooth like a smoothie). Strain the liquid through a very fine mesh sieve into a bowl. The fibre will collect inside of the sieve, while the juice will collect in the bowl. Pour the juice into a drinking glass or jar and enjoy.
This juice makes 2 small or 1 large serving. Given the endurance-promoting properties of beet juice, this recipe is the perfect drink for endurance athletes like runners and nordic skiers. It’s very refreshing after a long run.
Even if you’re not an endurance athlete, you can still make this juice. Drink some in the morning for a nice caffeine-free wake-up, or bring a mason jar with you to work to sip on in the afternoon. It should help to stave off an afternoon energy crash.
Now is the perfect time to make this juice, with citrus being in peak season. Plus, the vitamin C will boost your immune system when you need it the most.

Ultra energizing beet grapefruit juice! Perfect morning wake-up or afternoon pick-me-up, and great for endurance athletes. All you need is a blender!
- 1 medium beet, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1 medium grapefruit, peeled, sectioned, and roughly chopped
- 1 medium navel orange, peeled, sectioned, and roughly chopped
- 1/2 a medium lemon, peeled, sectioned, and roughly chopped
- 1/8 tsp cayenne
- 3/4 cup filtered water
- Place the ingredients in a blender (a high speed blender, such as a Blendtec or Vitamix, works best here).
- Blend until almost smooth. You don’t want it to be ultra smooth, because you need to be able to strain out the fibre.
- Strain the mixture through a very fine mesh sieve into a wide-mouth bowl (I have a stainless steel one with very tiny holes that works perfectly for this).
- Squeeze as much juice as possible out of the fibre that collects in the sieve.
- Pour the juice out of the bowl into a drinking glass or mason jar. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Now, go make this. Seriously. Because on Tuesday I’ll be back with a decidedly less clean, though no less delicious, French toast bake recipe. It may or may not feature a certain chocolate hazelnut spread. And bananas. You’ve been warned. 😉
