This espresso, almond butter, and maca smoothie is ultra energizing. Maca is an adaptogen that helps the body adapt to stress while also increasing energy and stamina. Combined with banana, espresso, almond butter, and coconut milk, this is one power-packed smoothie!
Happy Sunday! And happy fall! Hoping you’ve had a chance to spend some time in nature, in the kitchen, or doing whatever makes you feel joyous and fulfilled. That’s what weekends are for. 🙂 I have Sunday off for the first time in ages, and I savored the first light of the day with this cashew pumpkin spice latte and Margaret Atwood’s latest book, The Testaments. Next, I plan to take full advantage by going to the farmer’s market, getting a good sweat on with a strength workout, and baking these vegan Nutella cinnamon buns (!). I’m also going to work on a roasted cauliflower and fennel soup recipe for the blog, since I’ve got a big local organic cauliflower in the fridge that needs to be eaten!
Now, onto this smoothie. I must admit that I’ve never been the biggest fan of green smoothies, but give me something with espresso, banana, and nut butter and you’ve got me for life. This smoothie is inspired by one at Pure Kitchen, a vegetarian restaurant here in Ottawa. Espresso, almond butter, maca, and banana form its base. Protein powder is optional: I used some, but if you don’t have any on hand, you can simply add a spoonful of chia seeds or ground flax to thicken it, plus a pitted Medjool date, if desired, for sweetness.

I hope you love this smoothie. It’s energizing, packed with protein and healthy fat, and super yummy–it has a bit of a butterscotch flavour thanks to the maca, with undertones of coffee.

Happy Wednesday!
Is it possible to use almond butter, cacao and coconut oil instead of coconut butter?
Also, how many calories is this smoothie?
Thanks so much!
Lisa

Hi Lisa! Happy Wednesday to you, too! You can definitely use a tsp or two of coconut oil, or you can just use a bit more almond milk in place of the coconut milk, and cacao would probably work perfectly- I love cacao and maca together. As far as calories go, I just did a calculation on verywellfit.com; one smoothie (using the 1 tbsp of almond butter, the coconut milk, and protein powder) contains just under 400 calories. I hope this helps! 🙂
