A Virtuous Pie Toronto review!
A couple months back, I had the opportunity to enjoy a meal at Virtuous Pie, a vegan pizza and ice cream joint in Toronto (with other locations in Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland, Oregon).
I had already enjoyed Virtuous Pie while in Vancouver a year earlier, but my travel companions hadn’t yet tried it, so we went for lunch on our last day in the “Big Smoke.”
The all-vegan restaurant focuses on hand-crafted pizzas, salads, appetizers, and desserts in a fast-casual atmosphere. It’s the kind of place you visit when you’re looking for a delicious, quality vegan meal without having to get dressed in your Sunday best.
The menu changes seasonally, but a sampling of items you will typically be able to order are mac and cheese in a skillet, garlic knots, kale Caesar salad, and, of course, pizzas, with clever names such as ‘Superfunghi,’ ‘Stranger Wings,’ and ‘Ultraviolet.’
We opted to start with a kale Caesar salad featuring shredded kale, ‘bacon’ bits, Parmesan, and tahini Caesar dressing.
PIZZA
For pizzas, I ordered the Sweet Pepper and Sausage (San Marzano Tomato Sauce, Cashew Mozzarella, House-made Italian Sausage, Red Peppers + Onions, Hot Honey), while my companions ordered the Superfunghi (Cashew Mozzarella, Herbed Potato Cream, Truffle Almond Ricotta, Wild Mushrooms, Arugula) and the Pesto CBR (Bianca Sauce, Pesto Chicken, Chili Broccoli, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Cashew Mozzarella, Bacon, Ranch Drizzle, Arugula). And of course we got some garlic ranch dipping sauce on the side. 😉
We decided that the Sweet Pepper and Sausage pie came out on top. I’m feeling called to create an inspired version for the blog. What do you think?
DESSERT
By some miracle, we managed to save room for dessert. Actually, do we ever not save room for dessert?
We decided on two scoops of the chocolate ice cream in a house-made waffle cone. But I was wishing that I would have had room for an ice cream sandwich. If you visit any of the Vancouver locations, you will also have the option of ordering soft serve ice cream, as well as vegan doughnuts from and baked goods from To Die For, a vegan bakery owned by Erin Ireland!
The service was excellent, and the food was inventive, delicious, and satisfying. I would highly recommend Virtuous Pie to vegans and non-vegans alike.
