This smoothie tastes like chocolate cake batter, but it’s actually full of healthy ingredients like oats, banana, nut butter, cacao, and protein powder!

Hey, it’s almost Friday! Let’s celebrate the end of the week in style, shall we?

It appears as though I am on both a smoothie kick and a chocolate kick, and I cannot be stopped. Can you blame me? With summer in full swing and the humidity showing no signs of abating in these parts, it was only a matter of time before I combined the two.

Have you ever awakened in the morning with an intense craving for chocolate? Since I was introduced to raw cacao powder in 2014, it has been a staple in my morning routine. Sometimes it makes its way into overnight oats, but more often than not, I add a tablespoon or two to a smoothie. Chocolate dreams really do come true. 😉

I find it incredibly energizing, but it provides a longer lasting and more uplifting kick than coffee. It’s also packed with magnesium (an important mineral that is involved in hundreds of functions in the body, including energy creation, nervous system relaxation, protein formation, and muscle movement) and antioxidants. Not bad for something that adds such a rich and decadent flavour to your morning meal!

Here, it plays a starring role in my chocolate cake batter smoothie! I often find that smoothies don’t hold me over for much longer than an hour or two, especially when I’m running a lot (that runger is real, folks!). Not so with this one, as I included a full serving of rolled oats and protein powder in this ridiculously delicious drink.

Note that you will need to soak the rolled oats in the almond milk for at least an hour, or overnight, to soften them and prevent them from making the smoothie too gritty in texture, so plan ahead before making this smoothie!

Other than that, this smoothie is SO EASY to make! Plus, it has over 25 grams of protein, magnesium, antioxidants, and fibre. Pretty virtuous for a breakfast that looks and tastes like chocolate cake batter.

If you make this recipe, let me know! Leave a comment and tag a photo @upbeet.kitchen and #upbeetkitchen on Instagram!

I’ll be back in a couple of days with a longer post and a savoury recipe. Until then, enjoy drinking healthy cake batter for breakfast! I know I will.
